Setting the Stage for Ketosis
The body enters a natural metabolic state called ketosis when there is no glucose available from carbohydrates to be used as energy. When there is no glucose present, the body starts to break apart fatty acids, leading to the production of ketones that can be used as an alternate power source.
In order to enter and maintain a state of ketosis, it is essential to drastically reduce your carbohydrate consumption.
There are a few ways people achieve ketosis. Fasting is one way. When fasting either completely or in an intermittent fashion, the body will enter ketosis when its supply of glucose has been depleted.
These techniques may allow you to enter into a ketogenic state temporarily, however, once you eat an adequate amount of carbohydrates, you will no longer be in ketosis.
The ketogenic diet is another method. A ketogenic diet involves cutting down your carbohydrate consumption to only 20 grams a day, while significantly increasing your fat consumption.
It is not necessary to consume fat in order to achieve ketosis, although certain fats like caprylic acid may help speed up the process, as a research review paper in PeerJ noted in March 2018.
Including fat in a keto diet can influence how long and easily the diet can be followed. Fats can help you feel fuller for a longer period of time, even when you are limiting your carbohydrate and calorie intake. To be successful in weight loss, it is essential to consume fewer calories than you expend.
Juice Fasting
Fasting with only fruit and vegetable juices for a certain amount of time. Generally, individuals begin with a juice cleanse that lasts for three days, but some individuals go on for weeks, consuming nothing but juice.
There are many reasons to do a juice fast. People engage in it for various reasons; such as to slim down, take in more vitamins and minerals, have a greater sense of wellbeing, or to clear out toxins from the body. Certain of these motives have proof to back them up, whereas others (like detoxification) do not.
You use a juicer to extract juice from organic fruits and vegetables each day. This process eliminates the plant material (mainly fiber) and results in a liquid that is abundant in minerals.
Juice fasting requires reducing your calorie intake, but not to the point of completely abstaining from calories like most other intermittent fasting plans. That is because while on a juice diet, you take in calories – mostly in the form of sugar – from fruits and vegetables.
Fruit juice has more calories than vegetable juice as it contains a higher amount of sugar. Vegetable juice can be metabolized more easily, however, we will discuss this further at a later time.
You can combine juice fasting with herbal teas and smoothies, in addition to fresh juice and filtered water. Certain protocols also include supplements which claim to help cleanse the body of toxins.
Does Juice Fasting Help You Lose Weight
It appears that juice fasting could be beneficial for weight loss. The probable cause of this phenomenon is that the caloric intake is reduced during these short-term purifications, which means fewer calories are consumed, resulting in less weight gain.
Check out our selection of most popular products and find your go-to snack or supplement. In a limited investigation, 20 people of good health slimmed down significantly after only drinking fruit and vegetable juices for three days.
Fruits and vegetables are certainly packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. A combination of kale, spinach, and ginger produces a substantial amount of nutrients that far outshines the Standard American Diet.
Does Juice Fasting Detoxify the Body
Many individuals are convinced that juice cleansing can remove poisons from the body. Unfortunately, there isn’t any evidence for this widespread myth.
The liver is an organ that aids the body in removing toxins from the system by either expelling them through urine or feces. It is suggested that you do a liver detox every now and then, such as a juice cleanse, to help the liver with its detoxification process.
This is not logical, because your liver does not save poisons. There are no toxins to detox. The term juice cleansing, then, is misleading. You may be consuming essential minerals, but there is no detoxification of organs or toxins.
The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, a part of the National Institutes of Health, provides additional proof that detox diets are not effective.
Diets that severely limit caloric intake or the food varieties consumed generally do not provide long-term weight loss, and could lack the essential nutrients the body needs.
It has been suggested that there may be some additional benefits that are not related to detoxing associated with juice fasting.
Juicing on the Keto Diet
Drinking juice can assist you in cutting back on the number of calories you consume in order to shed pounds, but it is just as difficult to maintain as fasting with only water. It is not advised to do a juice cleanse for a period of 30 days. You will not acquire the necessary calories, carbohydrates (especially fiber), protein and other essential nutrients to maintain your well-being.
In many situations, this can prevent weight loss from happening – not only because it may lower your metabolic rate, but also because you are unlikely to have the energy needed to stay active, which is another crucial element for losing weight.
It is feasible to achieve ketosis while undertaking a reduced-carb juice fast, but it is difficult. A lot of juices are made with fruits which makes them too high in carbohydrates, making it difficult to stay in ketosis.
As an example, a combination of apple, spinach, kale, collard and lemon juice may contain up to 25 grams of carbohydrates in each portion.
That exceeds the total amount of carbohydrates allowed for a ketogenic diet like Atkins 20. If you limit yourself to drinking only one juice beverage each day, it is possible that you could enter a state of ketosis. How long can you keep up with that and stay in a state of ketosis?
Low-Carb Juice Fast
A large variety of fresh produce can be consumed in its raw or cooked form on a ketosis diet without surpassing one’s daily carb allowance.
In order to produce a single glass of juice, you need to consume far more fresh fruits and vegetables than you can eat in one sitting. Therefore, you will have a large quantity of carbohydrates in an 8-ounce glass.
Therefore, juicing fruits is not an option. However, even just drinking vegetable juice can cause you to exceed your carbohydrate limit.
For instance, one portion of a dish with celery, parsley, mint, cucumbers, and lemons has approximately 26 grams of carbohydrates (20 grams of net carbs). If you intend to consume more than one juice drink in one day, you will go over the prescribed amount of carbohydrates for achieving ketosis.
This being said, there are alternatives – if you can handle them. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, a single cup of celery contains just three grams of carbohydrates, and half of that is dietary fiber.
When you juice, you remove the majority of the fiber, leaving you with a beverage that is very low in carbohydrates. It is theoretically possible to consume up to 13 cups of raw celery in one day and still stay within 20 grams of carbohydrates.
Should You Juice
It is perfectly acceptable to go on a juice cleanse for a few days. It is essential to recall that you will remain in ketosis only if you pick vegetables with very low carb content and do not exceed your daily intake. But what will you achieve?
The Mayo Clinic states that it is possible to lose some weight, but a large portion of this is likely to be water weight. It is probable that the number on the scale will decrease, but it won’t be due to the loss of body fat.
If you’re drinking juice in an attempt to cleanse your body, don’t anticipate any significant effects. The National Institutes of Health have not found any proof that juice cleanses have any effect on the body’s detoxification process or any effect on health in general.
If you stick to a low-carb juice cleanse for an extended period of time, it is possible to experience some fat loss. This is likely due to entering a state of ketosis as well as the fact that your caloric intake will be drastically reduced. Thirteen cups of chopped celery have only 184 calories.
You could be harming your physical health in other ways, and you may not feel good.
Celery has a lot of beneficial elements like vitamin C, vitamin K, folate, potassium, and antioxidants, but it does not contain many other essential nutrients. Eventually, you will probably experience a lack of several essential vitamins and minerals that are necessary for optimal wellbeing.
Potential Health Benefits
There is not an extensive amount of studies on the advantages of a juice diet. Despite this, there are a handful of research studies which indicate that the practice might bring some benefits.
Considering this, these are four possible advantages to juice fasting.
1. Weight Loss
In the study that has just been discussed, 20 healthy individuals experienced a considerable decrease in weight after following a three-day juice cleanse. One reason why? They ate fewer calories. Consuming fewer calories (or abstaining from food) has been demonstrated to be an effective method for shedding pounds.
The same researchers discovered something else that may explain why juice fasting results in weight loss: gut bacteria. Those who finished a juice cleanse changed the bacteria in their intestines. These shifts were towards bacteria linked to weight loss.
Be aware that the first amount of weight that is lost during a fast is usually just water weight. This water comes from the glycogen reserves (saved glucose), which are depleted during abstaining from food and limiting carbohydrates.
Sustainable weight reduction can be achieved by following a ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting, or a combination of the two.
2 Heart Health
It is still premature to assert that juice cleanses are beneficial for cardiovascular health, however there are two investigations that are worth noting. The first was the aforementioned weight loss study. After three days of juice-only dieting, 20 healthy people had:
- Significantly higher levels of nitric oxide (NO), a blood-vessel-relaxing chemical linked to a healthy-functioning cardiovascular system.
- Significantly less lipid oxidation. Oxidized lipids accelerate the progression of atherosclerosis, or the buildup of plaque in the arteries that’s the primary feature of heart disease.
In a separate study that involved only five men, researchers had them follow a juice fast diet of between 150-300 calories per day. After eight days on this protocol, the men had:
- Lower triglycerides
- Lower insulin levels
- Higher low-density lipoprotein (LDL) concentrations
The first two bullets are seen as having a beneficial effect on decreasing the risk of heart disease, whereas the last bullet (a higher LDL) is not.
Studies have suggested that greater amounts of LDL cholesterol can increase the chance of developing heart disease. There is plenty of proof to suggest that LDL particles are a major factor in the development of atherosclerosis.
3. Vitamins and Minerals
Fruits and vegetables contain some of the highest concentrations of nutrients in the world. Fortunately, many of these vitamins and minerals are retained after juicing.
Here is a list of vitamins and minerals commonly found in plant-based juices and their respective roles.
- Vitamin C: Supports immunity, antioxidant defense, and collagen production. Vitamin C is found in spinach, broccoli, kale, cherries, oranges, and papayas.
- Vitamin A (beta carotene): Serves as an antioxidant and converts to preformed vitamin A (retinol) in your body to support immune and bone health. It’s found in carrots, spinach, and pumpkins.
- Folate (vitamin B9): Crucial for cellular energy production and DNA synthesis. It’s found in broccoli, spinach, and lettuce.
- Magnesium: Essential for muscle function, energy production, and blood sugar regulation. It’s found in spinach, kale, chard, and bananas.
- Calcium: Necessary to structure your bones and teeth, contract your muscles, and much more. It’s found in spinach and cruciferous vegetables.
4. Antioxidants
Through the course of many years, plants have developed particular substances to ward off insects and other animals that may be a threat. The compounds in question have antioxidant (or polyphenol) properties, and can be harmful to the creatures that consume them.
When humans eat polyphenols, it activates a stress response. “The stress response states, ‘Hey, here’s a bit of poison’, then suggests, ‘Let’s increase our protection!'”
Therefore, the polyphenols that come from plants activate your body’s detoxification process. By producing internal antioxidants such as glutathione, you can improve your overall health.
The effectiveness of antioxidants such as sulforaphane from cruciferous vegetables is remarkable. They do not provide sustenance to your cells directly, but rather stimulate processes that encourage well-being.
If you are doing a comprehensive juice cleanse, you are consuming a variety of plant polyphenols such as flavonoids, flavanols, anthocyanins, and carotenoids. Researchers assume that these chemicals are probably the cause for any heart-related advantages that are connected to juice cleansing.
Get Your Veggies in Ketosis
If your primary objective is to achieve ketosis and remain healthy while doing so, a well-structured ketogenic diet is a more viable option than juicing. Although following a ketogenic diet can still be difficult, it is much easier than adhering to a juice cleansing with minimal carbs.
You can enjoy a wide range of foods while following the keto diet, which has a high fat content and can help you feel full. This diet can provide you with all the necessary nutrients, leading to lasting results.
You should get your calories from healthy sources such as olives, olive oil, grass-fed butter, cheese (not pre-packaged), fish, unprocessed meats, nuts, seeds, avocados, and eggs on a healthy ketogenic diet.
You can enjoy a range of low-carb veggies when following a keto diet, such as spinach, kale, radishes, bok choy, broccoli, zucchini, and Swiss chard.
You won’t be losing out on any fiber when you use whole vegetables instead of juicing them, which is great for your digestive and heart health, and it’ll help you feel full so you can maintain your calorie consumption.
This is an eating plan that can be maintained over the long term. Despite this, it is still thought of as a trend-based diet, as it severely limits your consumption of certain nutrients and meals. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics advises against following fad diets.
A more effective way to achieve overall health and weight loss over the long-term is to have a balanced diet that restricts unhealthy carbohydrates such as sugar and processed grains, while still incorporating reasonable amounts of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins.
